This funny, irreverent and provocative documentary from political comedian Bill Maher and Larry Charles, director of Borat, sets out to challenge that with its vicious attack on religious ideas, beliefs, and claims that are patently absurd, comical, or ridiculous. Maher doesn't let anyone off the hook, whether they worship God, Jesus, Allah, Buddha or marijuana and he approaches his interviews armed with both incredible knowledge and a deep scepticism. His argument, that in a society afraid to challenge its dogmas religion is downright dangerous, encourages people to engage their brains while choking back tears of laughter. For this is not a film that takes itself all that seriously, and like Borat, its principal achievement is to make Americans look really, really dumb. In this love story-opera, courtesan Violetta Valery meets a new admirer, Alfredo Germont, who confesses his love. Trouble brews when Alfredo's father demands that she renounce his son since the scandal of Alfredo's affair with her has threatened his own daughter's engagement. Violetta resists but eventually agrees. Back in Paris, Alfredo denounces his former love cruelly, and months later, Violetta, deathly ill with tuberculosis, has only days to live. Alfredo becomes contrite as he learns the truth, but it may already be too late to ask her forgiveness. This 2007 production at La Scala sees Angela Gheorghiu in her celebrated debut as Violetta. Praised by Bloomberg for having "mastered the role" and "acting her socks off," Gheorghiu leads an all-star cast which includes Ramón Vargas and Roberto Frontali. On a sunny afternoon in the Home Counties Sally Driscoll is watering her plants in the conservatory of her luxurious home, clad only in a swimsuit. Peaceful enough - but suddenly a bespectacled, suited man, John Barrett, appears at the door. Is he selling double glazing? No - it would appear that the Barretts met the Driscolls in Torquay. Simple Barrett may appear, but simple he is not. After some exacting word-play, and the arrival of Mark Driscoll, it seems that Barrett is "dangerously obsessed" with pinning the blame for his wife's accident on someone. Gradually the tale unfolds, revealing conflicting facets of the Driscolls' lives. These Barrett strips away, until he exits, as suddenly as he entered, leaving behind shattered faith, broken trust and a marriage that will never heal.
